just some questions game severs vs having a server

4 posts in this topic

Me and a friend were thinking of hosting a game and adding in special mods and making a little business out of it.

Just had some questions for people that are in the market for getting game hosting or have experience.

People tend to go with game host providers for the simple setup, and instant access to their game servers. but what about just getting a regular server.

1. Would you consider a server that could be instantly set up as a game server with support, but you still had access and support to do anything you wanted on it?

2. What is the biggest pains you have had having any sort of hosting provider (games or even regular)

3. What is the most important thing to you when it comes to your game server.

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration

To be quite honest, it totally depends on what you plan to do with it. Regular server hosts will usually have fair usage quotas in place to prevent the overselling of their stock, for example - Multiplay will only allow you to use a maximum a 1GB of RAM before restarting your server, this is based on past experience so it may have changed since then. but yea Bandwidth, diskspace and memory are the main factors. The biggest pain about the dedi really is the setup. Yes your host will set it up so much but then you have to consider service and memory management.

Hope this helps!

Hi JRSolidArray

I think it is important to ask about your knowledge and skill level. If you are confident in your abilities then just renting a server can save you money and give you a blank canvass to create your mod.

In the past we have had very succesful Arma servers and that is how we did it. I have to point out that in our group we had a key member who was willing to torture himself over the details that is required in scripting.

The results were huge. We could have any type of Admin control, Staggering FPS, loyal players and a mod that we were proud of. If we had taken a route that was too convenient then we would have had another server which was just like the millions to the left and right of it.

As you're probably aware, even the choice of name can have an influence on the popularity!

yes, absolutely

2. What is the biggest pains you have had having any sort of hosting provider (games or even regular)

We once got kindly asked to leave a server host because we were constantly under DDoS attack. It was not their fault as it was and exceptional level of attack. But it was a pain. It meant new IP and a complete move of server files. Days were lost and so were players.

3. What is the most important thing to you when it comes to your game server.

FPS. Get good hardware and make sure you have active admins.

Cheers :)

1.) What exactly do you mean by this? Being instantly setup is just a bonus because some older gamers prefer to use the time they currently have and sort the rest later. From the past experience I had, always having the instant setup was nice because once ordered, I gave it up to 15 minutes and I had all the information for my server. After that, I got everything I needed to setup for my own setup and went from there (I did this majorly for clans so I was specific on the setups for the servers - configuration wise). Having the freedome of the configurations for me is key for any server you own because you do not want to pay for hosting a server and then being limited to what you can do. It's your server and you should not have to worry about having to have the support assist you on stuff that in general, should be done without.

2.) Personally, it was always the support of the provider and the quality given. You may hear so much but until you personally try it yourself, you will never know the pain some providers will allow to force onto you without you knowing it till it's too late. Now I speak for certain providers as back many years ago, I tried many due to this but many always forget simple things like support, how the customers should be treated (with all after effects once support is used) and how the servers freedom and quality is given to the customer (basically pre-judging the provider without support at all).

3.) Freedom. Good support. Being able to host through another without the support. Quality uptime service too.

This view is my own personal one I have taken from being a provider and being someone who use to rent from providers. Hope it helps.
